Manhole molds are commonly made of two main materials: plastic and metal. Different materials have different characteristics, applicable scenarios, and processing methods. The key is to choose the appropriate type based on the manhole's usage environment, construction requirements, and cost budget. Among plastic materials, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) is the mainstream choice. This material has strong chemical stability, is resistant to acid and alkali corrosion, and can adapt to scenarios containing corrosive media such as municipal drainage and community sewage. It is also lightweight (more than 50% lighter than steel molds of the same size), making it easy to handle and assemble. The molded manhole surface is smooth and not easily stained. However, HDPE material has relatively weak heat resistance and rigidity. When exposed to high temperatures (such as summer sun exposure) or subjected to significant external pressure (such as areas crushed by heavy vehicles), it is prone to slight deformation. Therefore, it is mostly suitable for ordinary manhole scenarios with non-heavy loads. Polypropylene (PP) is also a common material for plastic molds. Its rigidity is slightly better than HDPE, and its temperature range is wider (-20℃ to 120℃), but its low-temperature resistance is slightly worse. When used in cold regions, antifreeze agents need to be added for modification. It is typically used for small manhole molds in temperate climates.

 

Among metal materials, carbon structural steel (such as Q235 and Q355) is the most widely used type. This type of steel has high strength and rigidity, can withstand heavy loads and frequent use, and is suitable for manhole applications in municipal main roads, factory areas, and other scenarios where it needs to withstand long-term vehicle traffic or external impacts. Steel molds can be welded and bent into complex structures (such as irregularly shaped manholes and large-size manholes) and have a long service life (can be reused more than 50 times under normal maintenance). However, steel molds are heavy (a 4-meter-long mold can weigh over 300kg), requiring mechanical handling, and are prone to rust, requiring regular rust removal and prevention treatment (such as spraying epoxy zinc-rich paint). Stainless steel (such as 304 and 316) manhole molds are suitable for special scenarios with strong corrosion (such as chemical industrial parks and coastal areas). Their corrosion resistance is far superior to that of ordinary carbon steel, and their surface has a high degree of smoothness, making it difficult for dirt to adhere. However, they are more expensive (3-5 times that of ordinary steel molds) and are usually only used in special environments with high corrosion and high requirements.

 

In addition, there are a small number of composite manhole molds, such as fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP). This material combines the corrosion resistance of plastics with the high strength of steel. It is lighter than steel molds and more durable than plastic molds, but its processing is complex and its cost is relatively high, limiting its application. It is mostly used in specific engineering scenarios where high weight, strength, and corrosion resistance are required. Overall, different materials for manhole molds have their own suitable applications, and the selection should be based on a comprehensive consideration of the actual usage environment, load requirements, and cost.
